DO NOT RECYCLE ALUMINUM FOIL

Aluminum begins as a mineral called bauxite which is found in the earth’s crust in some parts of the world. Most locations where bauxite is found impose strict requirements for restoring the environment after its mining. After the bauxite is processed, two pounds of aluminum will create approximately 300 feet of household aluminum foil.

Mining and processing raw bauxite into aluminum foil can be an expensive process and requires 75% more energy than making foil from recycled aluminum products. Environmentally friendly recycled aluminum foil provides the same food protection qualities as foil made from raw materials.

While many aluminum products can be recycled, you should only place aluminum cans in your red recycling bucket. Items such as aluminum foil and aluminum trays should be disposed of in your regular trash. Items such as aluminum ladders, window frames, and siding are worth money and may be recycled at your local scrap dealer.
