SPRING
CLEANING TIPS
Spring is
here, and soon County residents will begin that annual ritual
of cleaning the garage, basement, sheds, etc. Many residents
will find durable goods in usable condition and left over
hazardous household products such as paint or garden chemicals.
Look for opportunities to sell or donate used items; this
reduces waste and promotes recycling. Bring your household
hazardous waste to one of the free collection days sponsored
by the Improvement Authority in conjunction with the City
of Millville, the Landis Sewerage Authority, and the Cumberland
County Utilities Authority. By following these suggestions,
you can conserve landfill space and help to protect the environment.
The following
are some ideas on what to do with durable goods in usable
condition instead of sending them to the landfill:
·
There are many charitable organizations that
distribute used articles to the needy. Check your yellow
page listings for "Thrift Shops," "Consignment Shops," and
"Social Service organizations."
·
Many community organizations such as schools,
churches, YMCA/YWCA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, senior citizen
centers, etc. have need for such things as office equipment,
books, audio-visual equipment, nursery equipment, and more.
·
Organize a garage sale with your friends
and neighbors for a group sale.
·
Many churches, libraries, humane societies,
etc., sponsor rummage sales as fund-raisers. They often need
donations from the public to have successful sales.
The Cumberland
County Improvement Authority has scheduled three Household
Hazardous Waste Clean-up days in 2000. The dates are May
6, June 10, and September 16. Cumberland County residents
may safely dispose of their gasoline and kerosene, pesticides
and herbicides, used motor oil and antifreeze, transmission
fluid, car and lead-acid batteries, household batteries, oil-based
paints, turpentine and thinners, and other solvents. You
should store your material in a safe manner until the clean-up
day you plan to attend.
