BE
A WASTE WISE CONSUMER
In addition
to recycling, reusing, and composting your waste, there are
steps you can take to ensure that non-recyclable waste you
create is minimal. These are steps you can take before the
garbage is created in your home or business.
Waste prevention
means reducing the volume and toxicity of waste destined for
disposal at our landfill. Consider the health of the environment
when shopping by selecting products and packages that are
environmentally sound. Don't just recycle what you buy. Make
it a point to buy what you can recycle. For example, disposable
razors could be replaced with reusable razors. Many items
can be purchased without packaging. Vinegar, lemon juice,
and Borax can take the place of many common household cleaners.
Always try to make changes compatible with your lifestyle,
so you will be more likely to continue them.
When shopping
you can follow these simple rules:
· Don't
buy what you don't need.
· When you
do make purchases, choose products that are durable and reusable,
not disposable.
· When buying
disposables, choose products in recyclable packages and recycle
them. Also, select packages that are recycled. Purchasing
recycled products completes the recycling loop.
· Select
products with the least amount of packaging. Excess packaging
wastes resources and money.
· Choose
products that are safe and non-toxic.
· Let your
voice be heard. Tell store managers, manufacturers, and legislators
what you think. Your opinions do matter and do make a difference.
