CUMBERLAND COUNTY IMPROVEMENT AUTHORITY

SUPPORTS THE USE OF "GRASSCYCLING"

Most people realize how easy and effective trash recycling is, but most people don't know about grasscycling. Grasscycling is a method of using old grass clippings to grow thicker, greener, healthier grass. This method will give you a great lawn with a fraction of the effort and saves you a lot of money that would be spent on unneeded routine lawn care.

A typical lawn of 5,000 square feet generates about 75 pounds of grass clippings per mowing. Most people waste their time and effort collecting these clippings and disposing of them. Studies have shown that by mowing frequently, 5-6 times per month, and not bagging those clippings can save homeowners up to 40% of the time they would be spending on their lawn.

This process of grass recycling is extremely simple. You cut only one-third of the grass blade and leave the clippings where they fall on the lawn. When this is done properly, clippings settle quickly between the growing blades of grass. These clippings shelter the roots from the sun, conserving moisture, and prevent that brown burned-up grass that is so common during the summer. As the clippings break down they release moisture as well as nutrients into the soil. The result is that the grass needs to be watered less frequently.

Things to remember when grasscycling:

  • Mow when grass is dry to avoid tracking and clumping
  • Keep your mower blade sharp
  • Cut only 1/3 of grass blade
  • No extra equipment is necessary. If you have a collecting bag just remove it (in case of rear exhaust mowers, the exhaust chute must by shut off).

Grasscycling is a completely natural way to have a thick, green, and healthy lawn. By using this lawncare method you are doing yourself and your lawn a favor. You might otherwise be spending precious time, money, and effort on your lawn with no guaranteed results. Grasscycling will save you from all of this and give you the time to enjoy your lawn, instead of constantly slaving over it.
