15TH ANNUAL PUBLIC LANDS CLEAN-UP CONTINUES TRADITION OF SUCCESS

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NJ: Over 200 volunteers from throughout Cumberland County will take part in the second public lands clean-up effort of 2005. The Waterways Clean-up is made possible through the support of the Cumberland County Improvement Authority, the Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Municipal Clean Communities Programs, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, Al and Sam’s Canoes, and the many individuals, groups, organizations who participate.

“ Volunteer groups will patrol a variety of waterway areas throughout Cumberland County this year including parts of the Maurice River, Foster’s Run in Upper Deerfield Township, Willow Grove Lake, the Maurice River Bluffs Preserve, and Union Lake Beach,” said Dennis DeMatte, Jr., Cumberland County Recycling Coordinator. “It is very heartening to see the volunteer spirit that we have in Cumberland County which is displayed by groups and individuals in a number of different Improvement Authority sponsored programs. It sets a great example for all of us and reminds us that we can make a difference in our community through volunteer efforts.”

“ As part of the Public Lands Clean-up program, the Improvement Authority waives tipping fees at the Solid Waste Complex, provides trash containers at strategic locations throughout the County, and assists with the transportation of the waste which is collected,” DeMatte said. “In addition, the Clean Communities Program provides shirts, bags, and gloves for all of the volunteers who take part.”

Since 1990, the Clean Communities Program has removed over three million pounds of litter, tires, and illegally dumped waste from our County’s roadways, protected woodlands, and precious waterways. For more information, or to volunteer for the Waterways Clean-up, please contact the Cumberland County Improvement Authority at 825-3700.

Over the last 15 years, the Clean Communities Program has removed over three million pounds of trash including nearly 14,000 tires from our roadways, woodlands, and waterways.
