SANTORO COMPLETES COURSEWORK TO BECOME A CERTIFIED RECYCLING
PROFESSIONAL
MILLVILLE, NJ: Cumberland County Assistant Recycling Coordinator
Heather Santoro recently completed the New Jersey Recycling
Certification Series and is now a Certified Recycling Professional.
The Certification Series is offered through the Rutgers University
Cook College, Continuing Professional Education Program. The
program is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Department
of Environmental Protection, Division of Solid and Hazardous
Waste, and is co-sponsored by the Association of New Jersey
Recyclers (ANJR).
“
Changes in enforcement requirements and waste management programs
being driven by New Jersey’s Solid Waste Management Plan
will require changes in the day-to-day planning for businesses
and municipalities throughout the County,” said Improvement
Authority Executive Director Steven R. Wymbs. “Information
obtained through the Recycling Certification Series will help
staff work with Municipal Recycling Coordinators and County
businesses to develop effective programs in order to meet State
mandated recycling goals.”
“
The New Jersey Recycling Certification Program is the most
comprehensive training program for recycling and solid waste
management professionals in the United States,” said
Cumberland County Recycling Coordinator Dennis DeMatte, Jr. “Over
250 Certified Recycling Professionals (CRP) have completed
the series since its inception in 1993. To become a CRP, you
must attend the eight required courses and successfully complete
course proficiency assignments in each.”
CRP courses include topics such as Understanding Recycling
Economics, Recycling Public Policy, New Jersey Recycling: Practice
and Theory, and Recycling Non-traditional Materials. ANJR was
instrumental in developing the series and remains active in
updating course content. Once certified, CRPs must complete
12 hours per year of continuing education/training on issues
relating to solid waste and/or recycling in order to maintain
their certification.
“
The New Jersey Recycling Certification Series has helped prepare
me to meet the challenge of keeping the public informed about
changes in the recycling industry,” Santoro said. “Through
a continuing public education program, Cumberland County businesses,
municipalities, and residents can achieve better recycling
results, which saves landfill space and preserves natural resources
for future generations to enjoy.”
Heather is a 1999 Graduate of Millville High School and a 2003
Graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Political
Science. She previously worked for the City of Millville as
the Assistant Recreation Program Coordinator.
