DONT
TAKE A VACATION FROM RECYCLING
As we enter the summer months, many families are taking
their annual vacations. The beautiful weather provides the
opportunity to enjoy family gatherings and summer parties
with friends. Along with the festivities comes an abundance
of waste. During this time, we encourage you to remain environmentally
aware, and not to take a vacation from recycling.
When planning
your get-togethers, remember to use reusable, instead of
disposable, cloth napkins, tablecloths, plates, silverware,
and cups whenever possible. When you do use disposable paper
party supplies, choose recycled plates, napkins, and paper
towels. It is also a good idea to provide recycling containers
for the volume of glass, plastic, and aluminum bottles and
cans that you will accumulate.
In addition
to parties, the summer season provides us with gorgeous
green lawns and wonderful flowering gardens. Yard waste
which you accumulate, including grass clippings, garden
waste, and branches from pruning trees and shrubs, along
with other organic material, may be composted. Composting
is a practical and convenient way to handle your yard waste.
Composting can be easier, cheaper, and more fun than bagging
these wastes or disposing of them in the County landfill.
In addition, the composted material can be used to improve
your soil and the growing conditions for your plants and
shrubs.
The Improvement
Authority would also like to remind you that the final Household
Hazardous Waste Day of 2001 will be held on Saturday, September
15, at the City of Vineland Road Department on Walnut Road.
In addition, a Tire Amnesty Day and Electronics Recycling
Day will be held Saturday, November 3, at the Cumberland
County Solid Waste Complex on Jesses Bridge Road in
Rosenhayn. For more information about these and other recycling
programs, contact the Cumberland County Improvement Authority
at 825-3700.
