RECYCLE YOUR STEEL
Recycling
steel saves energy and natural resources. According to the
steel industry, for every ton of steel that is recycled
we save 2,500 pounds of ore, 1,000 pounds of coal, and 40
pounds of limestone. Currently, approximately 66 percent
of the steel produced in the United States is recycled.
This saves enough energy to power 18 million households
for one year.
We
utilize steel everyday in a variety of forms including home
appliances such as washing machines, dryers, dishwashers,
ranges, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, and water
heaters. In addition, other everyday products such as steel
cans, lids and closures, and aerosol cans are a large part
of the solid waste stream.
In
fact, the steel used in appliance shells is made with about
25% recycled steel, and internal steel components may be
made using up to 100% recycled steel. For this reason, all
appliances contain recycled steel and are recyclable when
they have reached the end of their useful lives.
